Jan Lars Svartvik (18 August 1931 – 18 June 2024) was a Swedish linguist and professor of English at Lund University (1970–1995). He was the author of several grammar books on English that are widely used in teaching English in Sweden. One of his research areas was also corpus linguistics.

He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and of the Royal Physiographic Society in the city of Lund.[2]

Jan Svartvik died on 18 June 2024, at the age of 92.[3] His son Jesper Svartvik (born 1965), is a theologian.
