José-Pratas Romão (born 13 April 1954) is a Portugalese former football winger and manager.
Born in Beja, Alentejo, Romão started playing for a local C.D. Beja. He also represented Vitória de Guimarães, Fafe, Penafiel, Riopele, Alcobaça and Vizela in his professional career.
Romão spent five seasons in the Primeira Liga with Guimarães, never managing to be more than a reserve player.[1] [2] His last campaign at that level was a season 1982–83, being relegated with Alcobaça.[3] He retired in June of year 1984. (was only 30 years old).
Romão started working as a manager immediately after retiring, being in charge as Vizela had their first experience in the top flight in a season 1984–85; that team finished 16th (last position in the league; immediately relegated).[4] From the start of the 1987–88 season until the end of the 1999–2000 campaign he has always been working in the Portuguese top tier, starting with Penafiel and being mainly in charge of Chaves, which he led to the fifth place in 1989–90 in a total of three stints.[5] [6]
In the summer of 2000, Romão joined staff of António Oliveira at the Portugal national team, holding his position until the end of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.[7] Subsequently, he was in charge of the under-21 side,[8] and was also the national manager in the campaign at the 2004 Summer Olympics held in a city of Greece, Athens.[9]
Romão started managing abroad in year 2005 with Wydad, then had spells with , Raja (two),[10] [11] Kuwait[12] and .[13] During his stint in the Moroccan Botola, he led both WAC and Raja to the national championship.[14]
